Trying Hobbii.com Yarns - An Honest Review for Crocheters (2024)

Ordering yarn online can be tough, especially when you’re ordering yarns you haven’t been able to see and touch in person first. Today I’m sharing my yarn review of several yarn lines from Hobbii yarns. I’ve worked up each yarn into a crochet swatch, share my experience working firsthand with the yarn and everything you need to know about each yarn in order to help you determine if that yarn is for you.

For this Hobbii yarn review, I took a look at the following yarns: Wheel of Alpaca, Honey Bunny, Winter Glow Solid, Fluffy Day XL and Manaya.

Hobbii Yarn – Is it Legit?

Hobbii Yarn is a yarn brand located in Denmark (on the other side of the world from where I am) and ships internationally. They sell everything from yarn to stitch markers, to hooks, needles and project bags. They have set themselves up to be a one-stop shop for makers.

Recently I’ve seen a ton of posts in various Facebook groups asking “Is Hobbii Yarns Legit?”. And I get why people ask. The yarn sales on the Hobbii Website are insane and people wonder if those prices mean that they’re going to get a junky or cheap yarn.

But yes, Hobbii Yarn is absolutely legit and they have a great selection of different yarns with a variety of color options. I’ve ordered from them multiple times and even used some of their yarn in my upcoming book, Crochet Furry Friends.

Hobbii also has things like the Hobbii Lucky Bag (a mystery yarn bag), bingo app with lots of fun prizes to win as well a huge library of knit and crochet patterns available on their site.

The Hobbii Yarns I’m Reviewing

My yarn selection was based on picking different yarns for different types of projects. I got three different yarn weights: DK, Worsted and Super Bulky and a mix of animal fibers and acrylic yarns. I chose to stay away from yarns in finer weights just because the winter season is coming and I tend to stick with these three yarn weights for my crochet projects during the colder season.

I’ll share the yarn label information for each particular yarn we discuss, pictures of the yarn worked up in crochet swatches and my opinion.

My experience working with Honey Bunny Yarn

Using chenille and blanket yarns for amigurumi projects is all the rage right now and since I do so many amigurumi projects, I definitely wanted to give Honey Bunny yarns a shot.

I picked three Honey Bunny colors: Pink 47. White 01 and Hint of Pink 50.

This yarn has a velvety feel to it and creates a dense fabric. I used a 7mm crochet hook to do my swatch and the fabric felt very stiff and had zero drape. If you’re looking at using it for blankets or garments, you may have to go up a hook size or two until you find something that works more suitably for those types of projects.

For amigurumi though, that dense fabric is perfect. I’d probably go down to a 6mm or even a 5.5mm hook to use this yarn with amigurumi. It’s not as bulky as other chenille and blanket yarns so you can get away with a smaller hook size with this to prevent holes.

Honey Bunny glides nicely on the hook and was enjoyable to work with. I didn’t experience any shedding while working with it. However, it does have a tendency to worm (when the fibers slip off the strand holding them together) like most chenille yarns do.

Make sure you take precautions to prevent your yarn in your finished project from worming by melting the ends or tying the ends in knots.

Winter Glow

Yarn Label Information

Current # of Colorways Available:40
Yarn Weight:Worsted (4)
Fiber Content:51% wool, 49% acrylic
Yarn Ball Size:100 g (3.5 oz) / 350 m (382 yds)
Suggested Crochet Hook Size:5 mm (US H-8)
Crochet Gauge:
Care Instructions:Hand-wash at 86℉ (30°C) / Do not tumble dry / Dry flat

My experience working with Winter Glow Solid Yarn

Winter Glow Solid is a roving yarn with a twist in the strand. It has a slight halo which obstructs the stitch definition slightly. I did my swatch with the recommended 5mm crochet hook and I used basic stitches as well as some cables.

Because of the loose twist in the yarn, it does give the finished fabric a slightly rustic look due to the slight changes in thickness in the strand. Crocheting with it was enjoyable and it’s a decent yarn. It has that slightly scratchy, wooly feel to it and so I wouldn’t use it for something worn on large areas of bare skin like a sweater.

I’d personally use this yarn for a colorwork project because I think its fuzziness, available array of colors and stitch definition would lend themselves well to a project like that.

Fluffy Day XL

Yarn Label Information

Current # of Colorways Available:26
Yarn Weight:Bulky (5)
Fiber Content:100% Acrylic
Yarn Ball Size:100 g (3.8oz) / 140 m (153 yds)
Suggested Crochet Hook SIze:6.5mm (US K-10.5)
Crochet Gauge:
Care Instructions:Machine wash 30°C (86°F) / Do not iron / Low temperature tumble dry / Dry flat.

My experience working with Fluffy Day XL

I was pleasantly surprised by this chunky yarn! I did my swatch using a 6.5mm crochet hook in the Sage color and it was a pleasure to work with. It has a very subtle halo which would lend itself well to colorwork projects like tapestry crochet.

I had no issues with splitting and stitch definition was good despite it’s subtle fuzziness. I’d probably go up a hook size or two if I wanted more drape in my fabric because it was relatively stiff using the 6.5mm.

Overall, it’s a solid acrylic yarn and I enjoyed it enough that I’m going to do some testing with it for a crochet pattern I have in mind.

Each skein of this yarn has 153 yards which is enough to make an ear warmer, a hat or even a couple of small baskets. This yarn is also available as a worsted weight yarn with 312 yds to a ball for the same price as the bulky weight

Hobbii Yarns Manaya

Yarn Label Information

Current # of Colorways Available:10
Yarn Weight:Worsted (4)
Fiber Content:65% wool, 35% acrylic
Yarn Ball Size:200 g (7.1 oz) / 510 m (558 yds)
Suggested Crochet Hook SIze:5 mm (US H-8)
Crochet Gauge:
Care Instructions:Hand-wash at 86℉ (30°C) / Do not tumble dry / Do not iron / Dry flat

My experience working with Manaya Yarn

This yarn is an example of Facebook ads made me do it. I kept seeing this beautiful yarn show up on Facebook ads when I was scrolling and so took a chance to give it a try to see how it worked up in crochet.

I got 2, 200 g balls of this yarn in two different colors: Curry/Blue/Olive/Saffron (02) and Tangerine/Red/Purple/Pink (07) .

I worked up a crochet swatch using a 5.0 mm hook, using basic crochet stitches in the Curry/Blue/Olive/Saffron (02) color.

The yarn strand is two different colours twisted together: in the 02 ball it was black and another color and in the Tangerine/Red/Purple/Pink (07) ball, it was purple and another color. This creates a marled effect in the fabric.

The ply is relatively loose which lends itself to some splitting and it changed slightly in thickness as I worked through it. Some spots were more like a thin DK rather than a worsted weight. The resulting fabric has a rustic look when crocheted up and the twist in the ply diminishes the stitch definition.

The color changes in this yarn aren’t very long which means that you’d likely have to deal with mid-row color changes for larger projects. In my testing, some of the color changes seemed to be longer than others.

For instance, in my ball, of Curry/Blue/Olive/Saffron (02), the green / olive yarn was the longest color section. The colors mirrored each other instead of repeating the same pattern. My yarn came out in this order, blue, red, yellow, green and then back to yellow again.

The yarn has a slightly woolly feel to it but is soft enough to be worn next to skin. It’s current price point is $29 per 200 g balls. It’s a bit of a splurge, particularly for a yarn that’s 35% acrylic. I really wanted to love this yarn but it just didn’t knock my socks off.

Hobbii Yarns Wheel of Alpaca

Trying Hobbii.com Yarns - An Honest Review for Crocheters (13)

Yarn Label Information

Current # of Colorways Available:15
Yarn Weight:Light Worsted, DK (3)
Fiber Content:80% Acrylic, 20% Alpaca
Yarn Ball Size:250 g (8.8 oz) / 940 m (1028 yds)
Suggested Crochet Hook SIze:4.5 mm (US 7)
Crochet Gauge:20 stitches, 28 rows to 10 cm/4
Care Instructions:Hand-wash at 30°C (86°F) / Do not tumble dry / Dry flat

My experience working with Wheel of Alpaca

Hobbii is known for its beautiful yarn cakes and Wheel of Alpaca is an 80% Acrylic 20%, Alpaca DK weight yarn blend that took me by surprise.

This is an incredibly light and soft yarn. I started making a crochet shawl with one of my cakes and it weighs next to nothing. Plus, the yardage in one of these cakes is bonkers – 1028 yards!

The color changes are very gradual with this specific yarn and they are quite long so you can get more mileage out of each colour. Even though there are only 19 colorways to choose from, they are all so beautiful, it’s hard to choose!

Trying Hobbii.com Yarns - An Honest Review for Crocheters (14)

The yarn does have a subtle halo and despite that and how soft it is, it has decent stitch definition. I was able to achieve a beautiful drape with not much effort in my shawl project and the resulting fabric so far is delightful.

Now the $36 USD price tag on one of these yarn cakes might put some people off trying this as a new yarn but it does seem to go on sale quite regularly in the low $20s. This is one of my favorite Hobbii yarns that I’ve worked with and one I’d happily order again.

Hobbii Yarns Review Conclusions

Overall, I think Hobbii yarns has a great selection of yarns available and you can score a great deal if you keep an eye on their sales. Shipping to Canada and the U.S. can be a bit pricey (especially if you get hit with customs). They do have free shipping thresholds (typically $99 USD) for North America. I’ve enjoyed most of the yarns that I’ve worked with and they are definitely worth, giving a shot.
