Critics Consensus

Showtime starts out as a promising satire of the buddy cop genre. Unfortunately, it ends up becoming the type of movies it is satirizing.

Billy L Funny movie to see how Eddie Murphy plans out by trying to be the cool guy but his partners kept saying to himself boring and lame lol. 🤣🤣 Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review Daniel M Amazing cast with a terrible story. I was so bored watching it that I turned it off half way. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review Clampotaku A humorous buddy-cop film that unfortunately doesn't really ever go anywhere substantial. I wasn't expecting high art here, but the "plot" as it was, never felt like it had a driving force. The antagonist was weak and severely underwritten and the second half of the movie felt extremely formulaic. It is a shame too because Eddie Murphy and De Niro worked fairly well together, all things considered and there were plenty of funny moments throughout. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/24/22 Full Review Raof N Robert de Niro and Eddie murphy have good chemistry but it felt that Eddie try so hard to be funny. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/22 Full Review Audience Member An underrated action comedy with De Niro and Eddie Murphy working pretty well together. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review William L A relativly straightforward and unsurprising buddy-cop movie, which is odd given that the film opens by parodying any of the tropes of the genre. Murphy might provide some of his infectious energy, but De Niro mostly just goes through the paces, and their chemistry is never really solid. Plenty of bit parts for actors that would later make far bigger splashes in television rather than film, like James Roday Rodriguez (Psych), Peter Jacobson (House), and Judah Friedlander (30 Rock).
