How the Eagles beat the Chiefs 21-17 on Monday Night Football

  • The Eagles took their first lead with 6:20 left in the game on a 1-yard “Tush Push” touchdown by QB Jalen Hurts. It was Hurts’ second rushing touchdown, giving him 10 multi-rush TD games for his regular-season career. That ties Cam Newton for the most multi-rush TD games by a QB since 1950, per Stathead.
  • The Chiefs had a chance to win on their final possession in the closing minutes but turned the ball over on downs after reaching their own 49-yard line. An open WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling was unable to come down with a deep throw on second-and-10 near the goal line that may have proven to be the go-ahead score.
  • The Eagles were 0-5 on third down with 7:00 left in the third quarter then converted three tries on their two touchdown drives in the second half. Philadelphia entered the night leading the NFL in third-down conversion percentage (50.0%).
  • The Chiefs held a 17-7 halftime lead but went scoreless in the second half for the third straight game. Kansas City is averaging an NFL-low 5.3 points per game in the second half this season.
  • With the win, the Eagles improved to 9-1 for the second straight season, the first team since the 2005-06 Colts to start 9-1 or better in consecutive seasons. Monday’s win was Philly’s fourth after trailing at halftime this season (4-0), the most such wins and best such record in the NFL.

Eagles’ perseverance again on display in come-from-behind win over Chiefs

The pass Jalen Hurts improvised soared skyward, seemingly airborne for centuries, spiraling long enough to soak up enough swirling mist to plunge downward like a dead bird. The Philadelphia Eagles, largely lifeless on offense, suddenly had DeVonta Smith open on the sideline, tracking a ball he’d say suddenly “died on me,” leaning leftward until the 41-yard strike pinned him a yard shy of the pylon.

One more play. One more Hurts run. One more “Brotherly Shove” touchdown, and the Eagles secured the go-ahead score in their 21-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, yet one more second-half comeback in a 2023 season that so far has required four.

Inside the Chiefs’ offensive meltdown against the Eagles

He walked back to the locker room by himself late Monday night, through the long tunnel featuring the Kansas City Chiefs’ biggest accomplishments — the many banners celebrating divisional crowns, AFC championships and Super Bowls.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the Chiefs’ oldest receiver at 29, said only one word, a four-letter expletive. He used his helmet to display his frustration, triggering a sharp, loud noise when he slammed it against a wall. Then Valdes-Scantling bowed his head, his walk to the locker room still requiring several more steps.

A few moments earlier, Valdes-Scantling had an opportunity to help his teammates leave Arrowhead Stadium with a come-from-behind victory, one that would’ve alleviated a dreadful second half for the Chiefs offense. Sprinting toward the end zone and away from the last defender for the Philadelphia Eagles, cornerback Bradley Roby, Valdes-Scantling watched the ball, which was released in a perfect deep pass by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, reach his hands. Three seconds later, after falling to the turf, Valdes-Scantling watched the ball roll away from him and heard a sound no receiver wants to hear when in the end zone: The groan of the home crowd.

Instead of having a heroic moment, Valdes-Scantling’s drop with less than two minutes left encapsulated another second-half offensive collapse by the Chiefs, another 30-minute stretch of failure, this time leading to a 21-17 loss.

Chiefs rarely blow double-digit halftime leads

The Eagles rallied to beat the Chiefs after trailing 17-7 at the half. It marked just the third time in 104 Patrick Mahomes starts (incl. playoffs) that Kansas City has lost a game after holding a double-digit halftime lead.

The others? A pair of 11-point halftime leads against the Bengals in Week 17 of the 2021 regular season and then again in the 2021 AFC Championship Game.

Jalen Hurts, Eagles beat Chiefs 21-17 on ‘tush push’ touchdown

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 21-17 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City Monday night. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Trailing 17-14 with 8:56 left, the Eagles finished a seven-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a “tush push” rushing touchdown by QB Jalen Hurts.
  • The Chiefs, down 21-17 with 2:49 remaining, nearly won the game on a perfect 50-yard pass by Patrick Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling but it was dropped as he fell into the end zone. They failed to score any points in the second half.
  • Hurts was 14-of-22 passing for 150 yards, one interception and two rushing touchdowns, including the game winner. It was the 11th career game for Hurts with two or more scores on the ground.
  • Mahomes finished 24-of-43 for 177 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. TE Travis Kelce had one of those scores but also fumbled in the red zone in the fourth quarter and also had a crucial third-down drop on the final drive.

Fantasy scoring review

Here is my fantasy scoring review for tonight’s Eagles-Chiefs game.

  • This was expected to be a high-scoring shootout that favored the quarterbacks, yet neither of them scored 20+ points. Jalen Hurts needed two rushing touchdowns to get to 19.7 points, while the dropped pass by Marquez Valdes-Scantling cost Patrick Mahomes a shot at 20, as he ended up with 16.88 points.
  • Travis Kelce lost a fumble and dropped a key pass late in the game, yet he did find the end zone and caught seven passes for 44 yards, thus ending with a solid 15.4 PPR points, but he was a scoring liability in standard scoring leagues.
  • Isiah Pacheco finally broke out of his two-game slump of scoring fewer than 10 PPR points, but he did so just barely by weighing in with 10.1 PPR points.
  • D’Andre Swift was the leading scorer in the game, racking up 19.7 PPR points on 15 scrimmage plays. It continues Swift’s low-end RB1 scoring pace in just about every game this season.
  • A.J. Brown has arguably been the best fantasy wide receiver of the 2023 campaign, but the Chiefs had a shutdown game plan for him and held Brown to only 1.8 PPR points. That’s bound to be an anomaly, so no fantasy manager should even think of trading him away in leagues where the trade window is still open.
  • DeVonta Smith has now proven that his earlier season struggles are definitely over, as his 15.9 PPR points tonight make it three straight contests in which he has tallied 14.1 or more PPR points.

Eagles defeat the Chiefs 21-17

The Chiefs had an opportunity to regain the lead on their final drive, but Marquez Valdes-Scantling failed to secure a perfect 51-yard Patrick Mahomes pass in the end zone. The Eagles defense got off the field as Philly hung on for a 21-17 victory to improve to 9-1, maintaining the NFL's best record. Andy Reid suffers his first loss to the Eagles since becoming head coach of Kansas City.

Peyton and Eli are not fans of tonight’s officiating

Peyton and Eli Manning are not the types to complain about officiating, but they have both called out multiple chintzy calls tonight. Many of those have been in favor of the Chiefs, including the latest, which was a roughing the passer call where Peyton said that Patrick Mahomes was “begging for [the penalty call]” and that it was a bad call by the officials.

Can Patrick Mahomes do it again to the Eagles?

Chiefs take over down 21-17 with 2:49 to play.

Patrick Mahomes has engineered 16 career fourth-quarter comebacks including the playoffs and his last came in Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles (down 27-21, won 38-35).

'Tush Push' strikes again

The Eagles take their first lead of the night on a 1-yard rushing score by Jalen Hurts on the “tush push.”

Dating back to last season, Hurts has attempted 16 designed rushes from the 1-yard line or closer and he’s scored a touchdown on 12 of them (75.0%).

The average NFL QB has scored touchdowns on 65.5% of such rushes over that span.

Chiefs are winless versus teams that score 21+ points against them

The touchdown by Jalen Hurts moves the Eagles to the 21-point mark for this game. That is important because Kansas City has allowed 21+ points on only two occasions this season, and both of those ended in losses for the Chiefs (21-20 versus Detroit in Week 1, 24-9 versus Denver in Week 8.

Eagles take the lead in the late fourth quarter

After trailing 17-7 at halftime, the Eagles now lead 21-17 with 6:20 left in the game. There have been several come-from-behind moments for Philadelphia this season, and Jalen Hurts completed a 41-yard pass to DeVonta Smith at the Chiefs 1. A “Brotherly Shove” touchdown run by Hurts gives them the lead. Meanwhile, the Eagles' defense has held the Chiefs to 25 plays, 114 yards and no points in the second half.

Eagles not turning takeaways into points

The Eagles defense has forced two critical red-zone takeaways, but the Philly offense failed to produce points, much less yardage, off either. They punted after Kevin Byard’s first-half interception, and after Bradley Roby’s forced fumble, they went three-and-out with another punt.

A stat to keep in mind

The Chiefs have scored only one touchdown in the fourth quarter this season, which came in a victory last month over the Chargers. The one fourth-quarter touchdown is the fewest by any team in the NFL.

What you missed entering 4th quarter on Monday Night Football

  • The Chiefs and Eagles were tied 7-7 until late in the first half when Kansas City scored a TD (Patrick Mahomes pass to Travis Kelce) with 1:45 left and then added a FG as time expired in the second quarter. Kansas City has scored an NFL-high 60 points in the final two minutes of the first half this season and their +50 scoring margin during that stretch also leads the NFL.
  • The TD pass from Mahomes to Kelce was their 51st as teammates. That tied Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham for the third most by a QB-TE duo in NFL history. Only Tom Brady-Rob Gronkowski (90) and Philip Rivers-Antonio Gates (89) have more.
  • The Chiefs have been all over Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, sacking him five times and also forcing an interception after sending a blitz. Hurts has thrown six picks against the blitz this season, three more than any other player.
  • Jalen Hurts responded, however, with a 10-yard rushing score to cut the Chiefs’ lead to 17-14 with 4:05 left in the third quarter. The TD was Hurts’ NFL-high 34th rushing touchdown since he entered the NFL in 2020. That breaks a tie with Cam Newton (33) for the most rushing touchdowns by a QB in his first four seasons in NFL history.
  • The Chiefs ran for 162 yards in the first three quarters, already their second most in a game this season. The Eagles entered the night allowing an NFL-low 66.3 rush yards per game in 2023.

Jalen Hurts now tied for lead in games with a rushing touchdown

Jalen Hurts has been the Eagles' go-to goal-line rusher this season and that was on display again on his rushing touchdown that made the score 17-14. It is the seventh game that Hurts has scored a touchdown, which ties him with Josh Allen, Raheem Mostert, and Christian McCaffrey for the league lead in that category.
